How Far Have Astronauts Traveled in Space?

Gene Cernan and Jim Lovell have both flown as far as the Moon on two separate occasions. The distance between the Moon and the Earth varies over time but, at the maximum, it comes close to 250,000 miles. Both Lovell and Cernan must have traveled the better part of one million miles in space.

If you drove 100 miles every day, it would take you more than 27 years to travel one million miles.

If you flew across the Atlantic on the New York-London route each week, it would take more than five years to cover one million miles.

It would be faster to train as an astronaut!
