What Does it Cost to Feed an Astronaut in Space?

According to National Geographic, it costs $80,000 to put a gallon of water into orbit. A human needs three gallons of water a day for sustenance and bathing. That comes to almost $1.7 million a week per astronaut.

Thankfully fuel cells, which use hydrogen and oxygen to generate electrical power, also produce water as a byproduct.
