How Fast Was Apollo Moving When the Command Module Splashed Down?

The Apollo Command Module was moving at 31 feet per second if the full complement of three main parachutes was deployed. With just two parachutes, it was moving at 36 feet per second.

Please check our calculations:
With three chutes, we make that 21.1 mph.

With two chutes, the speed rises to 24.5 mph.

That's quite a crash. In an automobile, the airbags would deploy.
