On that tragic day in 1967, the Apollo 1 crew sat atop a Saturn 1B rocket. That Saturn 1B eventually launched on January 22, 1968, carrying Apollo 5 into orbit. It was the very first launch of a Lunar Module, LM-1. The Lunar Module had no crew. It didn't even have legs. But it provided NASA with an essential opportunity to test the Moon lander.
